Kiro vs Claude Code 2026: Approve Specs or Claude Login?

Editorial cover for Kiro vs Claude Code 2026 — approve specs or Claude login

Key takeaways

  • Pick Kiro when you approve requirements, design, and tasks before agents write—under AWS credits. Free is 50 credits/month; Pro is $20/user/month.
  • Pick Claude Code when the agent should run on a paid Claude plan in the CLI or IDE extension. Pro is $20/month; Code is not on Free.
  • Matching $20 list prices buy different bills: Kiro monthly credits ($0.04 add-ons) vs Claude’s shared chat-and-Code usage pool.
  • Neither when the job is Cursor’s daily Tab editor, GitHub issue-to-PR (Copilot), Codex on ChatGPT, or an open client on your own keys.

Before agents write, Kiro wants requirements, design, and tasks approved. Claude Code wants a paid Claude login and a long session over the repo—usually from the terminal. Two doors into agent work—the bill behind each door is a different story.

Who each tool is for

Requirements, design, and a task list get approved first. Then parallel agents run locally or in the cloud on AWS-operated billing. That is Kiro. Free is 50 credits/month. Pro is $20/user/month for 1,000 credits—current Free/Pro numbers also sit on the Kiro hub.

You already pay Claude—or you will. You want Anthropic’s official agent in the terminal, the IDE extension, desktop, or Slack. That is Claude Code. Pro is $20/month ($17/month billed annually, $200 up front). Claude Free is chat. Code is not on Free—see the Claude Code hub for Pro/Max notes.

This page picks between those two products. Tab all day in an AI-native editor vs Claude Code is Cursor vs Claude Code. Specs before code vs that same editor is Kiro vs Cursor.

Interface and how you build

Kiro homepage — spec-driven IDE home

You start a feature and Kiro drafts requirements, then design, then tasks. You approve each beat. Agents implement against that list—local or cloud—and a headless CLI can run in CI. The IDE imports Open VSX extensions. Paid plans unlock premium models where available. Credits bill the agent work.

You open a terminal (or the IDE extension) on a paid Claude plan. Claude Code reads the repo, edits files, runs commands, and can open PRs. Terminal, chat, desktop, and mobile share one Claude usage pool—rolling five-hour windows plus weekly caps on paid plans. Picking Claude models inside Cursor is still Cursor’s pools. That is not Claude Code.

Where it caps out: Kiro Free still pauses when the 50 credits are gone. Claude Free never includes Code. Tab on Cursor is a different product. Kiro sells add-on credits at $0.04 each. Claude sells Max or on-demand usage after the Pro pool.

First-hour setup (what actually differs)

Hour one is whether you approve specs on a Kiro login, or you sign into Claude and start a Code session.

Kiro

  1. Download from kiro.dev. Sign in with social login or AWS Builder ID. Start Free (50 credits) or Pro at $20/user/month.
  2. Point it at a real repo. Run one feature through requirements → design → tasks, then let agents implement.
  3. Watch the credit balance. First paid upgrade on social/Builder ID gets a $20 credit toward the subscription—confirm on Kiro pricing.

Claude Code

  1. Start from a paid Claude plan (Pro floor). Install the CLI or IDE extension from Anthropic’s product page.
  2. Open a real repo. Run one multi-file task you will review before merge.
  3. If five-hour windows feel tight, budget Max (from $100/month)—not Free.

Both Pros list $20. Kiro’s $20 buys 1,000 credits. Claude’s $20 buys into the shared chat-and-Code pool. A busy spec week on Kiro Free is fifty credits. A busy Code week on Claude Pro is the five-hour and weekly windows. Blowing Kiro credits is $0.04 each (or a higher plan). Blowing Claude’s pool is Max or API-rate overage. Pro through Max for Code also sit on Claude Code pricing.

Example workflows I’d shortlist

These are the hours I’d put on Kiro or on Claude Code. Specs-before-code is not a Claude chat window. A Claude plan agent is not an AWS credit balance.

  1. Ambiguous feature that needs shared requirements before code: Kiro Free or Pro. Claude Code can plan in the session; you still start from a Claude login.
  2. Long terminal session over a real repo on Anthropic: Claude Code on Pro, then Max if the windows bite. Do not buy Kiro Power for that path.
  3. Team already lives in AWS IAM/SSO and wants agent work under that roof: Kiro. A Claude Pro plan on top is a second vendor.
  4. Same Anthropic pool as Claude chat, desktop, and mobile: Claude Code. Kiro credits are a separate bill.
  5. Tab and Composer in one AI-native editor all day: Neither. That is Cursor—use Cursor vs Claude Code when Claude is the other side of the pick.

Pick rules

You are choosing how work starts, then a bill. Approve specs under AWS credits, or run Claude Code on a paid Claude plan.

Choose Kiro when requirements → design → tasks must land before agents write, and AWS-operated credits (or Free’s 50) match how the team already works.

Choose Claude Code when the agent should live on a paid Claude plan—terminal or IDE extension—and Pro at $20 (or Max from $100) matches how the team already pays Anthropic.

Choose neither when the job is Tab all day in an AI-native editor (Cursor), GitHub issue-to-PR (Copilot), or a ChatGPT-bundled coding agent (Codex). Open clients on your own keys belong on open source AI coding agent. Already comparing Kiro to the daily editor? That is Kiro vs Cursor.

Paying for both is allowed: Claude Code for Anthropic sessions, Kiro for AWS specs-before-code features. That is two bills. This page is A or B, not a bundle review.

Wrong fits

Buying Kiro Power because you wanted a Claude terminal agent is the usual mix-up. Power is 10,000 credits/month. It is not Claude Code.

Buying Claude Max because you wanted AWS spec documents is the other mix-up. Max raises Claude usage. Kiro’s heavy path is Pro Max or Power on credits.

Expecting Kiro Free’s 50 credits to cover unbounded agent weeks will stall. Expecting Claude Free to include Code will stall at chat.

Treating Kiro as “Claude Code with an AWS logo” skips the product split: specs gate the code on Kiro; a Claude plan login starts Claude Code.

How I checked this

This page compares Kiro and Claude Code: who each is for, first-hour setup, how you’re billed, and pick rules. Cursor, Copilot, Codex, and open bring-your-own-key clients stay out of scope except as links when the job is a different tool.

I used Kiro’s public pricing page and Claude’s public plans (including Claude Code product notes) as of October 2026. I pick by how work starts first (specs before code vs Claude plan agent), then by how usage is billed (Kiro credits vs Claude’s shared chat-and-Code pool).
