Claude Code Pricing 2026: Free Chat or a Paid Claude Plan?

Claude Free is $0—chat on web, desktop, and mobile. Claude Code is not on Free. Claude Pro lists $20/month ($17/month billed annually, $200 up front) and includes Code. Free keeps you in chat. Pro is the first individual plan that turns Code on. The public pricing page has no separate “Claude Code subscription” line.

As of October 2026, Claude Code bills through Claude pricing—Individual, Team & Enterprise, and API tabs. Numbers below follow that page. You’re buying a Claude plan that includes Code, not a Code-only subscription.

Current plans

The plan unlocks Code and sets how large the shared chat-and-Code pool is.

There is no public universal promo code as of October 2026. Confirm live dollars on the official card.

A quiet Code week on Pro is mostly the $20/month plan until five-hour windows and weekly caps run low. After a cap: wait, upgrade, or (on paid) turn on usage credits at API rates. Max raises the pool; it is still the same Claude bill, not a second Code product.

Max and Team also include separate monthly Claude Platform API credits (Max 5x $100/mo, Max 20x $200/mo; Team pooled up to $500) for API / Agent SDK work with a Console key—not interactive Claude Code. That product is Claude Max API credits.

What the Claude plan actually buys for Code

Claude Code is the agent you run from the CLI or an IDE extension against a real repo—search, edits, commands, PRs. On a paid plan, that work shares one usage pool with Claude chat, desktop, and mobile. Choosing Claude as a model inside Cursor is still a Cursor bill, at API list price: Tab, Composer, and Cursor’s weekly pool.

Pro is the paid start for individuals. Max is for heavier five-hour sessions. Team and Enterprise add seats and admin. The API tab on the same pricing page is pay-as-you-go Console usage when you are not on a Pro/Max plan.

Who it’s for

You want Anthropic’s official coding agent on a paid Claude plan, and you accept Pro’s $20/month plan (or Max from $100 when the shared pool is the problem). Free chat is not enough if Code is the job.

Wrong fits

Getting started without overbuying

1. If you only need Claude chat, stay on Free—Code will not unlock there.
2. Pay Pro at $20/month (or $17/month annual) when Code is the job.
3. Run one real multi-file repo task. Watch the shared pool with chat.
4. Only then buy Max—when five-hour windows or weekly caps are why you pay more—or Team when seats and admin are the reason.

Pick rules

I’d pick Pro when Code on a $20/month Claude plan is enough. I’d pick Max when you need 5× or 20× Pro usage per five-hour session from $100/month. I’d pick Team when 2–150 seats and central billing matter. I’d look elsewhere when the job is Cursor’s editor, Copilot on GitHub, Codex on ChatGPT, or an open BYOK agent.
